This week: I get a new piece of smart tech, listen to some bleeps and bloops, and start getting serious about my health.

This week in maisieccino. 2025-07-27

It’s been a weird few days! I’m still working through post-covid symptoms (it’s been seven weeks as of writing). This, uh, kinda limits the amount of stuff I can really do. A bunch of time last week was dedicated to running the gamut of tests to try and work out why my body isn’t working quite how it should be. Mostly came up empty other than a recommendation to take B12 supplements. Ah well.

In the meantime, I picked up a fancy lil armband that promises to help me manage my symptoms and pace my energy throughout the day. The idea is that, by being able to conserve my energy, it should help lessen symptoms and help me be able to do the things that matter. Seeing friends. Doing hobbies. Being there for my partner.

The first few days have been a bit annoying! I’ll get a little ping on my phone telling me to slow down and rest if I can, while I’m in the shower or walking to the local cafe or doing the dishes. It’s quite eye-opening how much my heart rate spikes up doing mundane tasks. I hope that by collecting all this data, it’ll guide me in my recovery, and also be of use to any doctor trying to help.

I think, unfortunately for post Covid issues, all GPs can really offer is counselling, ruling out serious issues, and recommend rest and hydration and gradual return to exercise. So I’m trying to get ahead on these things as much as I can. I’ll see what else is available to me and just try and commit fully to trying to get back to the things I love, like dancing and cooking and climbing. Watch this space!

What I’ve been listening to

Look, I’m not a music reviewer or anything. These are just some albums I listened to lately that I rather enjoyed.

Little People - Landloper

Really delightful bleeps and bloops to wiggle to.

Floating Points - Cascade

I really enjoyed tapping away on my keyboard and getting lost in the beats and samples. This is an album I’ll come back to often.

Paul SG - This Is Me

A pairing of drum and bass with jazz? Sign me up oh my gosh. This album is really smooth and relaxing, it comes with some fantastic samples and guest vocals.

Caribou - Suddenly

Some absolute bangers on this album like Home and Never Come Back. The samples and looping and cutting is really bizarre and fun and dynamic. I had a blast.

KOAN Sound - Evocation

I would argue that KOAN Sound are some of the best in the business for creating stunning soundscapes with so much depth and texture. Evocation is no exception to this. Emerging Path is a masterpiece.

Fit Check

I decided to pair together my pine green corduroy dungarees with my mint green linen shirt and I’m really happy with how it came out! This is the first time I’ve tried to do a monotone outfit but I thought I’d share because it made my feel really happy and confident. Like a cool librarian. :)

My new boots finally arrived to replace my aging Docs which have literally fallen apart beyond repair. Breaking them in is pain. My heels are in shreds!

And finally… nerd stuff

I’m starting to rebuild my Neovim configuration! Neovim is a text editor that runs in your terminal. I use it at home and work to write code, type up notes, and also review changes. I love the cluttered, distraction free writing experience.

Okay.

Maybe it’s a little busy and I have installed a lot of plugins. But. I like the idea of being able to customise my tools so much that they are unmistakably mine! I think there’s something quite wonderful about choosing every keyboard shortcut, menu, feature you want to include. This text editor works my way and my way only. Pure Maisiecore.

I’m not sure if I’ll write one of these every week! But it’s been quite fun thinking about what I’ve been up to, and summarising what I’ve found interesting or noteworthy. As you all might be aware, I’m trying to spend an even longer amount of time away from social media. I want to try and focus on sharing stuff on my own terms.

Let me know how you found this.
